This way, as you're sanding, you don't have to worry about being *perfect*. You have a safety built in with the whitewash that will hide a lot of flaws. I'd also recommend doing it a semi-satin. High gloss will show flaws and dirt, but matte will feel a bit rough and will be suuuuuper hard to clean. I think that whitewash feel would go amazing with your mood board too. We had black painted hardwood in our condo, and it always, always looked dirty. Like a black car, your black floors will show every speck of dust. They are a huge pain. I'm not personally sold on the painted floors...I was in a cottage with white painted floors for my wedding acolored painted floors seem a bit odd to me. Like someone above said, I would worry about what happens in a few years if you want a different color scheme. My gut instinct would be to power through and get the rest of the gunk off. However -big however- it's not my kitchen, and you seem enthusiastic about painted floors, and I do think you've come up with a clever and cute compromise idea! I think navy would be my choice.
