{renovate: the kitchen} a floor vote

Happy friday friends! I thought it would be fun, since it's friday and all, if we put my kitchen floors up for a vote!

As we talked about on Wednesday, we were trying hard to completely refinish our original hardwood floors. Above is where we left off. But, some of you might remember that I've actually been thinking about painting the hardwoods for awhile. In fact, I did a post about painting hardwoods a couple months ago. I LOVE the look of painted floors and so we decided to come to a compromise of the original vs. painted hardwood situation.

Here's how it breaks down:

Goal: To create one unified space between the kitchen and living room by keeping consistency in the hardwood floor finish.

Problem: Nasty horrible awful glue on the kitchen hardwood floors.

Solution: Create a template for paint + original hardwoods = best of both worlds. The hope if that having some hardwood showing will still create unity with the living room while giving the kitchen it's own {subtle} unique personality.

Here's where and why we vote. Friends, I have NO IDEA what color to paint floors! And it feels scary to even try and decide. Remember when you all voted on the color of my back doors? You were so incredibly helpful and we ended up with beautiful navy blue high gloss doors. I thought you might like to help again?!

As a reminder, here's the mood board for the room.
And here are the options, so far. The color on the wall, a greige, is the actual wall color.

OPTION 1: Grey

OPTION 2: Navy blue

OPTION 3: Turquoise

OPTION 4: Black
OPTION 5: Black racing stripe (aka, my husband made me to do it ;)

What do you guys think? Is black too harsh? Remember, there will be a lot of white cabinets breaking up the space. Is grey too subtle against the greige walls? Is a racing stripe over the top?! Haha! Is there another color completely you think would work well? You all have amazing taste and I would LOVE to know what you all think.

And, I hope you have a GREAT weekend!

  1. Cool! This could turn out to be really awesome! I think I'm voting for grey, but maybe more of a blue-grey so there's some contrast with the walls?

  2. These process posts are so fun. I vote no paint: it will never look the same, the cracks in the floor will hold food bits. I understand the conundrum of moving from hardwoods to a new surface would feel blocky. We faced the same thing in our renovation 5 years back: same situation of beautiful hardwoods elsewhere. I opted for cork the same color as the hardwoods and it was one of the best decisions we made: I love the cork floor. Visually it ties in with the wood floors, but it's softer on your feet and back, it never looks dirty, super easy to clean: love it. You can see photos from our remodel here: http://www.lelonopo.com/search/label/renovation . Or you could walk up the street three houses since we're your neighbors. DOH!

  3. I love the black with the racing strip but the navy is awesome too. I can't wait to see how it turns out!

  4. I love the black and the navy. I think the gray is too close to the walls (not dramatic enough, maybe?) and though I adore the turquoise, you might get sick of it.

  5. Oh man! I would be so scared to do this! :s
I vote for the navy blue! I also like LeLo's cork floor idea!

  6. I really love your mood board for the space and I think the navy would be the best choice. When you look at your mock-ups, I find the black to be too dark, especially if you're trying to make a smooth transition between the two rooms. The black adds a lot of contrast to the space. I think the navy would be interesting but a little less harsh. That's my two cents!!!

  7. I love either the navy blue or the turquoises! And I love the idea of a painted floor!!

  8. We refinished the original fir floors in our kitchen and I love it. I saw someone mention food in cracks? It has yet to happen in two years. I am obsessed with the black (no racing stripe) I think once you have the white cabinets in it won't seem too bold. It will also take the scuffs better and when it starts to wear off your dark glue will not bleed through.

  9. I always have a problem making a decision so I have two votes... you can count which ever you want!

Option 2- Navy- I love the contrast and I feel ties in to the other blues you have used in your house.

Option 3- Turquoise- I love how it ties in to your stripes in the hallway, living room, and back door. I don't know if it would be two matchy matchy though?

I can't wait to see the finished product!

  10. I wouldn't have thought I'd say it, but I like the black. If it feels too harsh, perhaps you could do a super dark navy. The navy above reads pretty light to me, but maybe a navy/black would be good?
    I love painted floors, too!

  11. I think the navy would be great.

  12. Benjamin Moore's Hale Navy HC-154 is a very dark navy and would look fabulous. Try the paint...you could always do the cork later! Go girl!

  13. I'm not totally against painted floors, but I would keep going and sand all the gunk off. It probably seems daunting now, but once it's done, I don't think you'll regret it. If you do decide to paint, though, I think a darker version of the turquoise would be nice. :)

  14. i would continue sanding the floors and then i would consider a greywash - not solid paint, shows some of the wood grain, still defines the space as a different room. i wouldn't do anything bright or dark because it's so limiting when it comes to decor. what you love today won't be what you love in five years and the last thing i would do is set myself up to repaint the floor. you can swap out decor and colors over and over with a grey/light floor. and if there is any chance you need to consider resale i'd doubly avoid the dark and bright.

  15. I think the navy would be awesome!

  16. You've got a lot of varying opinions here but I would definitely go really dark - either black or the deep deep navy that Cathy suggested. Is restraining the floors completely out as an option?

  17. If you decide to paint, my vote is the navy!

  18. Hmm. I'm not personally sold on the painted floors...I was in a cottage with white painted floors for my wedding acolored painted floors seem a bit odd to me. Like someone above said, I would worry about what happens in a few years if you want a different color scheme. My gut instinct would be to power through and get the rest of the gunk off. However -big however- it's not my kitchen, and you seem enthusiastic about painted floors, and I do think you've come up with a clever and cute compromise idea! I think navy would be my choice. I definitely can't wait to see how it turns out!

  19. Oh boy this is a hard one. No wonder you are asking for input! If you have the energy/time, refinishing the floors would be my option one. Otherwise I lean toward the black - I like the racing stripe, too. The only thing I have against dark floors is that pet fur stands out even if I just cleaned 30 minutes ago (we have dark painted floors in the bedrooms).

  20. From a totally practical standpoint going forward, my advice is avoid black. We had black painted hardwood in our condo, and it always, always looked dirty. Like a black car, your black floors will show every speck of dust. They are a huge pain. So, my vote is any color other than black!

  21. The black (with pinstripe) is my favorite. Definitely will add drama to the kitchen. Second would be turquoise. It will flow well with the colors in the other rooms of your home.

  22. Have you tried stripping the glue with one of the stripping chemicals, like KleanStrip or Jasco? It might work. Unless you really prefer painting the floor to cleaning it.

  23. I vote for the navy. Is the pic of your floor with navy a different color than the mood board? Have you considered the 4th color under the label (1) on the mood board? Or is that what you have and my eyes are playing tricks on me? Either way, I love the idea of the pattern on the floor, it'll look great!

  24. I actually think I might be partial to the black with the racing stripe- go hubby! ;) For some reason, with the greys and blues, I just think it will really set off the room... hard decision though! If you don't want the harshness of black, you could try a charcoal grey!

  25. Good job on the mockups! Love all the options. I kind of like the racing stripe, but with navy. Gray is also good!

  26. I vote black! I love how dark floors ground a room. But I know whatever you do will be beautiful!

  27. Is it too late? I vote turquoise!

  28. I second that you should continue sanding them (sucks, I know) and then do a really light "white/grey wash" Probably around 30% translucent, so the grain of the wood shows through. This way, as you're sanding, you don't have to worry about being *perfect*. You have a safety built in with the whitewash that will hide a lot of flaws. I'd also recommend doing it a semi-satin. High gloss will show flaws and dirt, but matte will feel a bit rough and will be suuuuuper hard to clean. I think that whitewash feel would go amazing with your mood board too.
